Modrić has agreed to a contract running through June 30, 2026, with an option for an additional year, potentially extending his career in Serie A until the age of 41. He will wear the number 14 shirt, a number with resonance from his days at Tottenham Hotspur as well as a nod to Milan’s storied past — famously donned by Carlo Ancelotti during his own playing career at the club.
The 39-year-old departs Real Madrid as the most decorated player in the club’s history, having amassed 34 major trophies, including six Champions League titles and the 2018 Ballon d’Or. The announcement follows on the heels of Real Madrid’s latest Club World Cup campaign and marks the close of a remarkable chapter in Madrid.
At his unveiling at Casa Milan, Modrić commented: “I’m very happy to be here to start a new chapter in my life… Big challenges await me.” His arrival is seen as a critical step for Milan, who finished eighth in Serie A last season and missed out on European competition. The club has brought back Massimiliano Allegri as manager with the aim of rebuilding and restoring Milan to the summit of Italian football.
Modrić’s leadership, experience, and pedigree are expected to be invaluable assets for Milan’s youthful squad as they seek a return to domestic and continental prominence.
