The Swedish striker, acquired from Sporting in a £63.5 million deal, was named in the starting XI just a week after joining up with the Gunners squad for preseason preparations. Gyokeres played 63 minutes before making way, as manager Mikel Arteta continues to assess his integration into the team.
Gyokeres had limited opportunities to impress, registering just 14 touches and completing four passes. Despite his minimal involvement, he showed glimpses of the directness and energy that persuaded Arsenal to make him the club’s record signing. Gyokeres tested the Villarreal goalkeeper with one shot at the near post and had another effort blocked, but service to him as the focal point of attack was sparse throughout the first half.
Frequently drifting left to combine with Gabriel Martinelli, Arsenal’s new number nine demonstrated his willingness to drop deeper in search of the ball and to stretch the opposition defense, but struggled to meaningfully influence the game as Arsenal’s midfield adjusted to his movement.
Speaking after the match, manager Mikel Arteta described the performance as containing “encouraging signs,” but acknowledged that Gyokeres and his new teammates need more time to develop chemistry. “He’s only been training with us for about a week, so it’s about building those relationships and getting him fully fit,” Arteta said.
The preseason fixture provided Arsenal fans with their first glimpse of their high-profile recruit in red and white. While Gyokeres’ debut was relatively quiet, his effort and intent were noted, with expectations that he will become a more influential presence as he settles into the team.
Arsenal’s preseason continues as preparations ramp up for the Premier League season’s kickoff later this month.
