A frantic scramble for the top eight will take centre stage as the Champions League’s new league phase reaches its final round of fixtures, with giants across Europe still unsure whether they will advance directly to the last 16 or be dragged into a perilous playoff.

Under UEFA’s revamped format, 36 clubs share one big league table, with the top eight qualifying automatically for the round of 16 and teams from ninth to 24th heading into two‑leg playoffs for the remaining places. Only Arsenal and Bayern Munich are certain of finishing inside that top bracket before the final matchday, leaving six automatic spots up for grabs and turning this week’s games into a continent‑wide lottery of permutations.

At the other end, the bottom four – Kairat Almaty, Villarreal, Slavia Prague and Eintracht Frankfurt – are already out of Europe, while 13 clubs know at least that they cannot finish lower than 24th and will extend their continental campaigns into the spring. For everyone else in the middle, the margins are razor‑thin, with goal difference and head‑to‑head records threatening to make or break entire seasons.

Real Madrid, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are among those who control their destiny. A Madrid win away to Benfica would secure a top‑eight berth and avoid the jeopardy of the playoff round. Liverpool, at home to Qarabag, know victory at Anfield will be enough to see them safely through, while Spurs can clinch their place with three points on the road at already‑eliminated Eintracht Frankfurt.

One of the standout fixtures comes in Paris, where Paris Saint‑Germain host Newcastle United in a showdown that could define both clubs’ European campaigns. The sides are level on 13 points with identical goal differences, meaning the winner is overwhelmingly likely to finish in the top eight, while the loser faces a far tougher route through the playoffs. A draw would leave both vulnerable to being overtaken by the chasing pack, piling even more tension onto the final minutes across the continent.

Chelsea, currently clinging to eighth place on 13 points, travel to Napoli knowing that a win should be enough to hold off their rivals, yet the table is so congested that even three points might not guarantee safety if others record big victories. Lurking just behind are Barcelona, Sporting CP, Manchester City, Atletico Madrid and Atalanta, all also sitting on 13 points and hoping to capitalise on any slip‑ups in front of them.

Barcelona’s home clash with Copenhagen is a case in point: a convincing win could catapult them into the automatic places, but anything less might leave them stuck in the playoff zone. City, facing Galatasaray at the Etihad, are keen to avoid the two‑legged playoff route, having suffered disappointment in that stage last season under the new format.

With Arsenal already secure and Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester City all in contention to join them, there remains a real possibility that six English clubs could finish in the coveted top eight. Elsewhere, European heavyweights such as Inter Milan, Juventus, Marseille, Bayer Leverkusen and PSV Eindhoven are battling not only to ensure progression but also to secure higher seeding positions that would give them an edge in any playoff draw.

The drama is just as intense near the trapdoor. Historic names like Benfica and Ajax are teetering close to elimination, needing both results and favours from elsewhere to survive. Benfica must somehow defeat Real Madrid and rely on several rivals faltering, while Ajax require victory over Olympiacos plus an unlikely sequence of outcomes to climb above the line and into at least 24th place.

As kick‑off approaches around Europe, the equations remain dizzying, but the stakes are simple: finish in the top eight and enjoy a clear path to the last 16, or risk everything in a playoff minefield where one bad night could undo months of work.
