After a 1–1 draw in the first leg at St James’ Park, Newcastle arrived in Catalonia believing they could go toe-to-toe with Barça. Those hopes evaporated over 90 chaotic minutes in which the Spanish side’s attacking talent, led by Raphinha, Lamine Yamal and Robert Lewandowski, ruthlessly exposed the visitors’ defensive frailties.
Raphinha set the tone early, firing Barcelona in front and repeatedly stretching Newcastle’s back line with his direct running and delivery from wide areas. Newcastle, however, initially refused to fold. Anthony Elanga twice punished sloppy defending to drag Eddie Howe’s side level, making it 1–1 and then 2–2 and briefly silencing the home crowd.
The match’s turning point came deep into first-half stoppage time. After a lengthy VAR review, the referee awarded a penalty for a foul on Raphinha inside the area. Lamine Yamal, who had earlier been at fault for one of Newcastle’s goals, stepped up under immense pressure and converted to restore Barça’s lead at 3–2 heading into the break. The goal swung the momentum decisively and seemed to break Newcastle’s belief.
The second half turned into a rout. With Newcastle pushing higher in search of a way back into the tie, Barcelona ruthlessly exploited the spaces. Fermin López struck to make it 4–2, capping an energetic display from midfield, before Lewandowski delivered a classic centre-forward’s brace to push the scoreline to 6–2. As the visitors wilted, Raphinha added further punishment with his second of the night, completing the “magnificent seven” and sealing an 8–3 aggregate victory.
The result underlines Barcelona’s resurgence on the European stage. Progression to the last eight brings a significant financial boost and adds weight to a season in which a new core is emerging, with young players like Yamal, López and Marc Bernal complementing the experience of Lewandowski and Raphinha. The emphatic nature of the win will also fuel belief that Barça can compete deep into the competition.
For Newcastle, the defeat is a brutal reminder of the standards at the Champions League’s sharp end. In only their second modern-era campaign, they briefly threatened an upset but were ultimately undone by defensive lapses, poor game management and the intensity of Barcelona’s second-half surge. Their exit, having conceded seven on the night, will sting, but also offers a harsh learning experience as the club seeks to establish itself among Europe’s elite.
Barcelona now await the quarter-final draw, with a daunting field ahead. On this evidence, though, few sides will relish the prospect of facing them in this kind of form.
