Bayern Munich have been crowned Bundesliga champions for a record-extending 33rd time after Bayer Leverkusen’s 2-2 draw against SC Freiburg on Sunday ended the title race with two games remaining.
Leverkusen, last season’s champions, needed a win to keep their slim hopes alive but fell short despite a dramatic late comeback. Freiburg took the lead just before halftime through Maximilian Eggestein’s powerful strike in the 44th minute. Early in the second half, a misfortune for Leverkusen saw Piero Hincapié score an own goal, doubling Freiburg’s advantage.
Leverkusen rallied late: Florian Wirtz pulled one back in the 82nd minute, and Jonathan Tah equalized in stoppage time. However, the draw left Leverkusen eight points behind Bayern, who have 76 points (19 wins, 11 draws, 2 losses), making it mathematically impossible to overtake the Bavarians.
The title marks a triumphant first season for Bayern’s new coach Vincent Kompany and delivers long-awaited silverware for England striker Harry Kane, who is also on course to finish as the Bundesliga’s top scorer. Club president Herbert Hainer praised the team’s achievement, stating, “The Meisterschale is coming back to Munich and FC Bayern. That was our big objective this season”.
With this result, Freiburg remain in the hunt for Champions League qualification, while Leverkusen’s challenge ends, confirming Bayern’s dominance at the summit of German football once again.
