Brighton & Hove Albion kept their European dreams alive with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Premier League champions Liverpool at the Amex Stadium on Monday night. The Seagulls twice came from behind before substitute Jack Hinshelwood netted a late winner, capping a memorable evening for Roberto De Zerbi’s side.

Liverpool, already crowned champions, looked to be cruising after Harvey Elliott opened the scoring in the ninth minute, tapping home after a slick move orchestrated by Conor Bradley. The visitors restored their lead just before halftime through Dominik Szoboszlai, whose cross-shot looped over Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.

But Brighton, undeterred, responded with resilience and tactical nous. Yasin Ayari levelled the match on 32 minutes, finishing off a flowing attack that showcased Brighton’s trademark passing style. After the break, the hosts continued to press, and their persistence paid off when Kaoru Mitoma, introduced as a substitute, pounced on a rebound in the 69th minute to make it 2-2.

The Amex erupted in the 85th minute when Jack Hinshelwood, barely a minute after coming on, latched onto Matt O’Riley’s pass and fired home the winner. The goal not only secured three crucial points but also lifted Brighton into eighth place, three points clear of Brentford, keeping their hopes of European qualification alive heading into the final weekend.

Liverpool had their chances to seal the game, most notably when Mohamed Salah, making his 300th Premier League appearance, missed a gilt-edged opportunity to extend the Reds’ lead. Manager Arne Slot rued his side’s missed chances, admitting, “If you don’t score the third one then it’s hard to win a game at this level, especially away from home. We cannot miss chances like we did if you want to win the game.”

Brighton’s substitutes proved decisive, with both Mitoma and Hinshelwood making instant impacts off the bench. The defeat marked the first time since December 2016 that Liverpool lost a Premier League match after leading at halftime, ending a remarkable run of 156 games unbeaten in such circumstances.

With one game remaining, Brighton’s European fate is not entirely in their hands, but their spirited display against the champions has given them hope. For Liverpool, the focus now shifts to celebrating their title and regrouping for next season after a rare slip in an otherwise dominant campaign.
