Chelsea have been dealt a major blow ahead of their decisive Champions League showdown with Paris Saint-Germain, as captain Reece James has been ruled out with yet another hamstring injury. The 26-year-old right-back felt discomfort in his hamstring during Saturday’s 1-0 Premier League defeat to Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge and has since been withdrawn from contention for Tuesday night’s second leg.

Head coach Liam Rosenior confirmed on Monday that James would not feature against PSG and revealed the defender is awaiting scan results to determine the full extent of the damage. The setback is particularly alarming given James’ injury record, with this latest problem understood to be the 10th hamstring issue of his senior career since 2020. Chelsea are concerned the captain could face several weeks on the sidelines if tests confirm a significant strain.

The timing could hardly be worse for Chelsea, who trail 5-2 from the first leg in Paris and need a near-perfect performance at Stamford Bridge to keep their European campaign alive. James’ absence robs Rosenior of his leader at the back and one of the team’s main attacking outlets on the right flank, forcing a reshuffle in defence. Malo Gusto is the most likely candidate to step in at right-back, although he has also been managing illness in the build-up to the tie, while goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen has a groin concern.

James had only recently underlined his long-term commitment to the club by signing a new six-year contract running until 2032, reinforcing his status as a central figure in Chelsea’s project. However, his recurring fitness problems continue to cast a shadow over his availability for both club and country, with England staff also monitoring the situation closely ahead of upcoming international fixtures.

Despite the loss of their captain, Rosenior insisted Chelsea must embrace the challenge and believe in the possibility of a famous European comeback against the defending champions. “We’re missing an important player, but this club has never shied away from big nights,” he suggested, calling on the squad to respond collectively in James’ absence.
