Chelsea’s Premier League title push suffered a major setback as Enzo Maresca’s side slumped to a 3-1 defeat against relegation-threatened Leeds United at a raucous Elland Road. The result leaves Chelsea fourth in the table and further adrift of leaders Arsenal, while Leeds climbed out of the relegation zone with one of their best performances of the season.

Leeds, who came into the match on a run of four straight league defeats, started with far greater intensity and were rewarded early. Jaka Bijol opened the scoring inside the first 10 minutes, rising highest to head home from a corner after Chelsea’s defence failed to deal with a routine set piece. Ao Tanaka doubled the hosts’ advantage shortly before half-time, drilling a powerful effort from the edge of the box that left Robert Sánchez with no chance and sent Elland Road into jubilation.

Maresca had opted for heavy rotation, making several changes from the side that drew with Arsenal, and his team looked disjointed in and out of possession. Without suspended midfielder Moisés Caicedo, Chelsea struggled to control the centre of the pitch and repeatedly lost second balls as Leeds fed off the crowd and pressed aggressively. The visitors offered little threat before the break, and their poor away record when trailing by two or more goals was an ominous backdrop as they walked off 2-0 down.

Chelsea briefly threatened a comeback after the interval. Half-time substitute Pedro Neto injected urgency and pulled one back within five minutes of the restart, arriving at the back post to convert Jamie Gittens’ low cross and give the visitors a lifeline. However, any momentum was squandered midway through the second half when a calamitous mix-up between Tosin Adarabioyo and Sánchez allowed Noah Okafor to pounce and set up Dominic Calvert-Lewin for Leeds’ decisive third.

The closing stages brought more frustration for Chelsea as they pushed forward without carving out clear chances, with returning forward Cole Palmer spurning a good opening that might have set up a tense finish. For Leeds, the final whistle was greeted with relief and celebration as Daniel Farke’s men ended their losing run, moved three points clear of the drop zone and sent a warning that Elland Road remains a difficult place for the league’s elite. For Chelsea, this defeat raises fresh questions over squad rotation, defensive concentration and whether their title bid can withstand nights like this away from home.
