City started strongly, breaking the deadlock in the 18th minute. Jeremy Doku danced through the United defence and, after his initial cross was blocked, sent in another delivery for an unmarked Foden to head home, delighting the home crowd. United showed glimpses of threat, with Benjamin Sesko denied by City debutant Gianluigi Donnarumma, but failed to find an equaliser before half-time.
The second half belonged to Haaland. The Norwegian star doubled City’s lead in the 53rd minute, chipping the ball over United keeper Altay Bayindir after another slick attacking move from Doku. Haaland nearly grabbed a hat-trick, but his effort bounced off the post moments later. He made no mistake in the 68th minute, sprinting clear after a Bernardo Silva pass and coolly slotting in City’s third of the night.
United, led by under-pressure manager Ruben Amorim, could not muster a reply and were left to rue missed opportunities as the home crowd celebrated with their trademark Poznan bounce. City’s win lifted them in the standings and sent a message to the rest of the league, while United’s defensive frailty and lack of cutting edge left questions about their direction this season.
The match also featured a heartfelt pre-game tribute to the late Ricky Hatton, a lifelong City fan, which brought both sets of supporters together before City’s attacking class took centre stage.
City’s lineup featured Donnarumma in goal, with Khusanov, Dias, Gvardiol, O’Reilly at the back; Rodri, Silva, Reijnders, Foden, Haaland, and Doku up front. United started with Bayindir in goal and a defence of Yoro, De Ligt, and Shaw, with Mazraoui, Ugarte, Fernandes, Dorgu in midfield and Amad, Mbeumo, Sesko up top.
Goalscorers: Foden 18’, Haaland 53’, 68’.
Manchester City’s emphatic derby victory was led by Erling Haaland and underlined their Premier League ambitions, while Manchester United face renewed pressure after a damaging defeat.
