Manchester United claimed a dramatic 2-1 victory over Chelsea at a rain-soaked Old Trafford yesterday, recording their second win of the Premier League season in a match filled with chaos, early dismissals, and individual milestones.

The game exploded in the fifth minute when Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was shown a straight red card for a reckless foul on Bryan Mbeumo, who was bearing down on goal. Forced to play with ten men from early on, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca shifted to a defensive setup and was swiftly forced into three substitutions in the opening 21 minutes, making Premier League history after Cole Palmer was sidelined by injury.

United took full advantage of their numerical superiority. Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring in the 14th minute, marking his 100th goal for Manchester United on his 200th Premier League appearance, courtesy of Patrick Dorgu’s well-placed knockdown. Casemiro doubled United’s lead, heading home after Chelsea struggled to clear Luke Shaw’s cross. However, the Brazilian’s fortunes turned sour when he was sent off for a second yellow card just before halftime, leaving both sides with ten men and reigniting Chelsea’s hopes.

Chelsea mounted a spirited comeback in the final 30 minutes, dominating possession and threatening United’s goal. Trevoh Chalobah’s header in the 80th minute offered a lifeline, but the Blues’ late surge was not enough to rescue a result. United clung on, thanks in part to decisive defending from Luke Shaw and a composed display from Altay Bayindir in goal.

Following the match, manager Ruben Amorim called for his side to harness their momentum: “We need that urgency to win again; it’s crucial for us,” he said, aware that pressure remains after recent results. Chelsea, suffering their first league defeat of the campaign, dropped to sixth in the standings, while United moved up to ninth thanks to this gritty performance that showcased both resilience and controversy.
