A blistering Chelsea start
Chelsea flew out of the blocks, dominating the opening half-hour and repeatedly forcing David Raya into action while Arsenal struggled to build any fluency or territory. Estevão and Enzo Fernández both went close as the hosts pressed high and attacked aggressively down the flanks, pinning Arsenal back.
The game’s rhythm was entirely in Chelsea’s favour, with the league leaders limited to speculative efforts and one tame Bukayo Saka shot that Robert Sánchez dealt with comfortably at his near post.
Caicedo’s red card turns the tide
The match flipped in the 38th minute when Moisés Caicedo lunged into a late, studs-up challenge on Mikel Merino, catching the Arsenal midfielder high on the shin. Initially booked, Caicedo saw his caution upgraded to a straight red after a lengthy VAR review, becoming one of several Chelsea players dismissed in the league this season and sparking fury in the home crowd.
Arsenal seized more of the ball against 10 men, pushing Chelsea deeper and stretching the pitch, but still struggled to carve open clear chances before the interval. Chelsea, though reduced, refused to retreat completely and continued to threaten on transitions and set pieces.
Chalobah strikes, Merino responds
Chelsea’s resilience was rewarded three minutes after the restart. Reece James whipped in a dangerous corner to the near post, where Trevoh Chalobah glanced a clever header across goal and inside the far corner to send Stamford Bridge into uproar and give the 10 men a 1-0 lead.
Arsenal finally made their advantage count just before the hour. Saka, repeatedly fouled and already the visitors’ main outlet, cut inside onto his left, stood up a cross to the back post and found Merino, deployed as a makeshift striker, who guided a precise header past Sánchez for 1-1.
Late pressure and missed chances
With more than half an hour still to play against a depleted Chelsea, Arsenal looked poised to push for a winner but rarely found sustained cutting edge. Merino forced a sharp low save from Sánchez from the edge of the box, while another long-range Saka effort was one of few genuine threats in the closing stages.
Chelsea, remarkably, continued to create the clearer openings on the break and from set plays, with Pedro Neto, substitute Liam Delap and Wesley Fofana all having sights of goal that could have snatched a famous victory. The final whistle confirmed a draw that underlined Chelsea’s growing steel under Maresca and left Arsenal relieved to escape with a point.
