Wales captain Ben Davies faces a race against time to be fit for his country’s 2026 World Cup play-off campaign after Tottenham Hotspur confirmed the defender will undergo surgery on a fractured ankle.

The 32-year-old left-back suffered the injury during Spurs’ 2-1 Premier League defeat at home to West Ham United on Saturday, leaving the field on a stretcher after receiving oxygen on the pitch with his left leg in a brace. The incident occurred midway through the first half, forcing an immediate substitution and raising fears of a serious setback for both club and country.

Tottenham have since announced that scans revealed a fracture to Davies’ left ankle and that the Welsh international is scheduled to have an operation, after which he will begin a period of rehabilitation with the club’s medical staff. The North London side did not provide a detailed timeframe for his return but acknowledged that the defender faces a significant spell on the sidelines.

Davies’ injury is a major blow for Wales, who rely on their skipper’s experience and versatility across the back line. Rob Page’s side host Bosnia-Herzegovina in a World Cup qualifying play-off semi-final in Cardiff on 26 March, with the winners to face either Northern Ireland or Italy five days later for a place at the 2026 finals, and Davies is now in serious danger of missing those decisive fixtures.

The setback also adds to mounting problems for Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank, who is already dealing with a lengthy injury list in a crucial phase of the season. Spurs’ defensive resources are increasingly stretched as they juggle domestic commitments with European competition, and losing one of their most experienced defenders further complicates their push for a top-four finish.
